Our Mission

The mission of First United Methodist Church of Atlantic is to make and mature disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

The vision of First United Methodist Church of Atlantic is:

Building bridges, connecting ourselves to God, to one another, and to others.

Our primary strategy for implementing our vision and mission, is to practice "The Art of Neighboring". This is our primary method of practicing making disciples and connecting with others. The Art of Neighboring was the focus of a sermon series preached during the summer of 2021, based on the book by that title, written by Jay Pathak & Dave Runyon. You can learn more by going to the website: https://www.artofneighboring.com, or you can borrow a copy from the the shelves of the church lounge.

Summary from the book: "When Jesus was asked to sum up everything into one command, he said to love God with everything we have, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Most of us have turned this simple idea of loving our neighbors into a nice saying, putting it on bumper stickers and refrigerator magnets, and then going on with our lives without actually putting it into practice.

What would happen if every follower of Jesus took the Great Commandment literally? Is it possible that the solution to our society's biggest issues has been right under our noses for the past two thousand years?"

Join us in helping fulfill our vision and mission for Jesus.
